Its mechanism of action involves structural similarity to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), allowing it to competitively inhibit bacterial dihydropteroate synthase. This prevents PABA from being utilized to synthesize tetrahydrofolic acid, a component essential for bacterial protein synthesis, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. Sulfadiazine exhibits a broad antibacterial spectrum, active against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, it shows efficacy against Chlamydia, Actinomyces, Plasmodium, and other microorganisms.
