Typically, HBeAg is enclosed within HBcAg. When HBcAg is cleaved, HBeAg is released from the hepatocyte nucleus into the bloodstream. Its appearance is later than that of HBsAg, but it disappears earlier, making it the second serological antigen marker detected following HBV infection. During acute hepatitis, HBeAg levels transiently increase, appearing during the incubation period before ALT levels rise, and then decline rapidly as the condition improves, eventually disappearing.
