Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that primarily infects humans and falls under the broad category of bacteriology. It is a leading cause of non-congenital blindness and the most common bacterial agent of sexually transmitted infections. Chlamydia trachomatis comprises three biovars and 19 serovars, with different serovars responsible for various diseases, including ocular infections, urogenital infections, and lymphogranuloma venereum.
In humans, infection often induces only weak and short-lived immunity, frequently leading to recurrent infections, persistent infections, or asymptomatic carriage. Chlamydia trachomatis is resistant to cold but not heat: it can survive for 10 minutes at 60°C, while its infectivity can be preserved for up to 5 years at -60°C. It is susceptible to common disinfectants such as formaldehyde, ethanol, and hydrochloric acid, and can be rapidly inactivated by ultraviolet irradiation.
