Scientific Background
3-Hydroxycarbofuran is the primary oxidative metabolite of the insecticide Carbofuran in biological systems and the environment. It retains the high toxicity of its parent compound and is classified as a derivative of N-methyl carbamate pesticides (NMCs).
This compound exerts toxicity by inhibiting Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, disrupting neurotransmission, and causing excessive accumulation of acetylcholine at synaptic junctions. Symptoms of exposure include nausea, vomiting, muscle tremors, and dyspnea, with high-dose exposure potentially leading to fatality. Due to its persistent toxicity and propensity for residual accumulation within the food chain, 3-Hydroxycarbofuran is a high-priority analyte in food safety monitoring programs.
