Background:
Progesterone is a steroid hormone. It is a female hormone that participates in the menstrual cycle and supports pregnancy and embryogenesis in humans and other animals. Progesterone is a progestogen and is considered the most important progestogen. In non-pregnant women, progesterone is secreted in large quantities primarily by the corpus luteum only during the latter half of each menstrual cycle. It is also secreted by the brain, liver, and adrenal glands. During pregnancy, the placenta also secretes it in large amounts.
