Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) is a lipoprotein particle that transports cholesterol to peripheral tissue cells. It can be oxidized into oxidized LDL (OX-LDL). When LDL, particularly oxidized LDL, is present in excess, the cholesterol it carries accumulates in the arterial walls, which over time can lead to atherosclerosis.
