Dioxins are a group of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic compounds, consisting of polychlorinated dibenzo‑p‑dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), collectively abbreviated as PCDD/Fs. The World Health Organization (WHO) and some countries, such as Japan, also classify polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as dioxin‑like compounds.
PCDD/Fs are highly toxic tricyclic aromatic compounds composed of two chlorine‑substituted benzene rings connected by one or two oxygen atoms. Each benzene ring can carry 0–4 chlorine atoms, giving 75 PCDD and 135 PCDF congeners. Toxicity depends on chlorination at the 2,3,7,8 positions; the 17 congeners with chlorine at all four of these planar positions are of greatest concern. The most toxic is 2,3,7,8‑tetrachlorodibenzo‑p‑dioxin (TCDD), with toxicity 1000 times that of potassium cyanide, earning it the title “the most toxic man‑made compound.” Due to its extreme persistence in the environment, it is also called the “poison of the century.”
These substances are not intentionally produced or used, but are by‑products of combustion and industrial processes. Major sources include emissions from wood preservation with chlorophenols, waste incineration, use of defoliants, pesticide production, paper bleaching, and vehicle exhaust.
