It works by inhibiting bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, thereby blocking folic acid metabolism. When used in combination with sulfonamides, it creates a dual blockade of folic acid synthesis, resulting in a synergistic effect that can enhance efficacy several-fold to dozens of times. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (such as E. coli and Salmonella), but exhibits weak antibacterial activity when used alone.
