Ceruloplasmin (CER), also known as ferroxidase, is a copper-containing α₂-glycoprotein. It functions to regulate copper distribution throughout the body and facilitate the synthesis of copper-dependent enzymes. Possessing antioxidant properties and oxidase activity, it catalyzes the oxidation of polyphenol and polyamine substrates. As a ferroxidase, ceruloplasmin plays a key role in iron metabolism by converting Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺, and is also involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism. It is generally synthesized in the liver, partially excreted via the biliary tract, with only trace amounts present in urine. Ceruloplasmin measurement holds diagnostic value for certain hepatic, biliary, and renal disorders. A significant reduction in serum ceruloplasmin serves as a critical diagnostic marker for Wilson’s disease (hepatolenticular degeneration), and its altered levels are also associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
