Nitrofen is a contact herbicide effective against most annual weeds, including barnyard grass, Eleocharis acicularis, Monochoria vaginalis, and Scirpusspp. in paddy fields, and crabgrass, green foxtail, and barnyard grass in upland fields. It controls weeds in vegetable fields of Apiaceae and Brassicaceae crops such as carrot, celery, and Chinese cabbage, and is also suitable for tea plantations, mulberry fields, orchards, and nurseries.

On October 27, 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) listed industrial-grade nitrofen as a Group 2B carcinogen in its preliminary compilation of carcinogens.
