Cyhalofop acid is the primary active metabolite of cyhalofop‑butyl, exhibiting herbicidal activity. It belongs to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate class and inhibits acetyl‑CoA carboxylase, blocking fatty acid synthesis, disrupting weed cell membranes, and leading to cell death in meristematic zones. It is highly effective against grass weeds such as barnyardgrass and goosegrass in rice fields, but ineffective against broadleaf weeds.

It has low toxicity to mammals but is highly toxic to aquatic organisms (e.g., fish, shrimp) and must be used away from aquaculture areas.
