Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the rifamycin family. It exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosisand is also effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain viruses. It is primarily used to treat tuberculosis, meningitis, and Staphylococcus aureusinfections, and can be applied topically for trachoma.
On October 27, 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorized rifampicin as a Group 3 carcinogen in its preliminary list of carcinogens.
