Ampicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Its indications include respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, meningitis, salmonellosis, and endocarditis. It is also used to prevent Group B streptococcal infection in newborns. It can be administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously.
On October 27, 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorized ampicillin as a Group 3 carcinogen in its preliminary list of carcinogens.
