It acts by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine portion of peptidoglycan subunits, effectively "hiding" the sites normally recognized by bacterial transpeptidases and carboxypeptidases for cell wall elongation and cross-bridge formation. This binding inhibits two critical steps: the elongation of peptidoglycan chains and the final transpeptidation step that incorporates new subunits into the cell wall.
